Bury Knowle Park

Headington Action takes an interest in the maintenance of Bury Knowle Park, one of Headington’s greatest assets. The following report is by Bob Clarke:

Back in October 2004 a group of members of HCDA [the previous title of Headington Action] had the opportunity to carry out a walk around the park with officers of the City Council. The two objectives of this exercise were:
  • to identify areas which were in need of maintenance
  • to suggest improvements that would enhance the park for both local residents and visitors.
We were able to agree on numerous areas which were in need of attention, and are pleased to report that action has now been initiated and improvements are becoming evident. For example:
  • The gates have been repaired and painted for the first time in many years
  • Several rotting trees have been cut down and young saplings planted
  • The flower beds in front of the library have been re-laid and the whole park is regularly cleared of rubbish by an attendant who is doing a first-class job
  • After a number years the sensory garden in the north-east corner has been the subject a big rework programme. It will certainly be a pleasant spot to sit and enjoy the sunshine in the coming months.
In the near future work will commence to renovate the tennis courts, which should delight tennis players of all ages. The other improvement that will please regular users of the park is that more seating will be installed near the main gates / children’s play area. We also hear that the toilets are due for repainting
