Contra-Flow Cycle Lanes

There is something very odd in New High Street: a cycle lane in the middle of the road that runs up towards the London Road, against the flow of the traffic. Everything on each side of it is going in the opposite direction, as it is otherwise a one-way street running south.

At least that cycle lane remains usable, as cars tend not to park in the middle of the road. The next side-street, Kennett Road, is also one-way for motor vehicles, which can only travel northwards up to the London Road. There is a cycle lane running in the opposite direction on the left-hand side which can rarely be used by cyclists because cars and vans always use it for parking (despite the fact that it is marked with double-yellow lines).
