News and Meetings

Bury Knowle Library
Christmas events:

The lights were turned on at a popular ceremony attended by about 200 people on Friday the first of December.  Thanks are due to Andrews Estate Agents for the tree; the Co-op, Waitrose and Heavenly Desserts for food and drinks; Sine Nomine for beautiful singing; Brookes students for help.

This year for the first time two of the street trees in Headington were lit up. These complemented the usual Christmas tree. The new lighting scheme is part of an ongoing project by Headington Action.

On the following day, Saturday 2 December, we held a special Christmas market.
In addition to the usual stalls there were a number of traders selling Christmas items.

Christmas started well in Headington!

Britain in Bloom award for Headington hanging floral baskets: The magnificent floral display in 2017 was submitted to the Thames and Chiltern Britain in Bloom scheme.  This was supported by a grant from Oxford City Council. We were delighted to receive a high award and an encouragement to develop the display next year.

Headington Festival 2018: Date announced - Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd June. As usual, the event takes place in the central shopping area on the Sunday and in Bury Knowle Park on the Sunday. Volunteers are needed to help organise the event.

Ruskin Crinkle Crankle Club

Picture
The Ruskin Crinkle Garden is a small walled garden in Ruskin college, which has an unusual chevroned wall designed to maximize the area for fruit tree training. Since it was opened as a community garden in 2011 with some support from Headington Action, it has developed into a beautiful garden with large communal plots and some individual plots for personal cultivation, some of which are currently available. It now has productive peach, apricot, fig, plum, apple and pear trees trained along the walls, and has provided those involved with potatoes, garlic, onions, shallots and squash, as well as other vegetables and herbs.

It is looked after by a team of volunteers from Headington and the surrounding area, and with the increase in the productivity of the Garden we need more volunteers to help in the maintenance of this unique space. If you would either like to learn about gardening, or enjoy gardening, and would like to do so in a friendly community, please get in touch via our website ruskincrinklecrankle.org, where there is information about whom to contact.
