Headington Action has set up a project called Connected Communities with the aim of reducing social isolation. We work with local authorities, GPs, universities, faith groups and community groups. Due to the rapid development of Headington in recent years there is a need to encourage and strengthen community ties.
During the Covid-19 pandemic the Oxford Hub (aka Oxford Together) set up a network of street champions. The Oxford Together system empowers local people to support each other and increase neighbourliness by creating WhatsApp groups for streets or collections of streets with a Street Champion (SC) for each group to coordinate and monitor the group. The Street Champions are grouped into Neighbourhoods and each Neighbourhood is managed by a Neighbourhood Coordinator. There are four such Neighbourhoods in the Headington Area. Oxford Together has stated it wishes to devolve the support of such a network to more local community groups such as HA.
The person will be expected to a) develop and maintain the infrastructure of Street Champions, b) support the SCs in their objective to encourage sign-up to WhatsApp groups and c) work together with those Street Champions to ensure effective communication between them and relevant agencies – particularly Oxford Together.
